Things you didn't know could harm your pet...

We love our pets for their eagerness to play and never-ending curiousity. However, these qualities can get their butts into trouble at times.

As much as we love our animals and try to keep them safe, things happen. However, being alert and prepared for the unexpected is a great idea! Dogs and cats both can suffer from accidents and injuries, and unfortunately, many result in vet bills over $200.

Here are some common dangers that are in and around our homes...

Toxic Plants

Pets who chew (or possibly brush against) poisonous plants can experience minor to really serious health issues. Be on the lookout for the following:

* Aloe *Amaryllis *Asian Lily *Autumn Crocus *Azalea *Belladonna *Bird of Paradise Plant *Bittersweet *Buckeye *Black Locust Tree *Branching Ivy *Caladium *Calla Lily *Castor Bean *Clematis *Cycads *Cyclamen *Daylily *Devil's Ivy *Dumbcane *Easter Lily *English Ivy *Ferns *Foxglove *Eucalyptus *Glacier Ivy *Honeysuckle *Hyacinth *Hydrangea *Iris *Kalanchoe *Lily of the Valley *Morning Glory *Nightshade *Panda *Poison Hemlock *Rosary Peas *Privet *Sago Palm *Tulip *Wisteria *Yew *Yucca

Harmful Foods

Many of us pet-parents know about some of the toxic foods that our pets cannot ingest (like chocolate)... however, did you know that different types of chocolate have differing levels of toxicity?!

Be sure to keep these foods away from Fido or Fuzzy:

*Chocolate *Salt *Tea Leaves *Grapes *Raisins *Avocados *Onions *Coffee *Raw Yeast Dough *Spoiled foods *Fatty foods *Garlic *Macadamia nuts

*Xyitol (found in LOTS of products - like some Peanut Butter brands!)

[Completed list can be found here]

Outside the Home

*Outside wells *Compost *Fertilizer *Oil *Fences/Gates *Algae *Antifreeze/coolant *Cocoa Mulch *Pesticides *Pools/Hot tubs *Deicing Salts *Fire pit *Gasoline

Inside the Home

*Drain Cleaners *Rodent Bait *Mothballs *Fly Bait *Detergents *Acetaminophen *Ibuprofen/Aspirin *Vitamins *Cold/Flu Meds *Bleach *Lead *Oven Cleaner Sprays *Tobacco Products *Lighter Fluid *Liquid Potpourri *SOME Essential Oils *Flea & Tick Products *Drugs & other medications

Objects

Surgical removal of items that your pet swallowed could cost you thousands (literally). Be on the lookout for these objects, especially if your pet is a 'chewer':

*Sharp Objects *Twist Ties *Jewlery *Rugs/Carpet edges *Socks *Towels/Rags *Paper Clips *Rubber Bands *Hair pins *Coins *Buttons *Glass *Batteries *Nylon Hair Bands *Plastic Wrap/Bags *Yarn/Ribbon/Needles *Wax *Electrical Cords *Dental Floss

Our pets are there for us in so many ways every day. When they need medical attention, cost shouldn't get in the way of being there for them. Please look into low-cost options that may be available through your local Humane Society or animal rescue organizations. Another option is CARE CREDIT (click here for information). Pet insurance may be beneficial and worth looking into also.
